What Are Dental Inlays and Onlays?

Made of ceramic, composite, or porcelain, dental inlays and onlays are an effective treatment option for larger cavities or fractured teeth. Onlays are used to cover the cusps (or points) of your teeth, and inlays are used to seal a cavity in the area between the cusps of your teeth.

What Is the Procedure Like?

Generally, dental inlays and onlays are placed over the course of two visits. We will remove the oral decay during the first visit and place a temporary filling. Then we will use a digital scanner to take a digital impression of your tooth. Say goodbye to that gooey impression material!  The digital image is then used to make the inlay.

During the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary filling and place the inlay. We will check the fit, bite and shade before we bond it with our LED light.

What Are the Top Benefits?

There are a few significant benefits of dental inlays and onlays. They include:

  • They can prolong the life of your tooth to avoid fracture.
  • They are durable enough to withstand significant wear and tear, so you don’t have to worry about them breaking or falling out.
  • They require less alteration of your natural tooth, allowing you to preserve more of your natural tooth.
