New Patient Dental Exam: What to Expect
Do dental visits make you nervous? You’re not alone. Dentists tend to make many people jumpy, especially if they’re seeing a new dentist for the first time. This exam allows you to meet Dr. Kristina Dawson and our team, learn more about our practice, and become familiar with our style of care.
What to Expect from a New Patient Dental Exam
Your oral care is just as important as your general health. Regular dental care is one of the best ways to maintain oral health, beginning with a new patient’s dental exam. We hope that your first dental appointment will be the stepping stone to long-term oral care at our clinic and that we can be instrumental in helping you enjoy a beautiful smile for life.
Here’s what you can expect from your first dental visit:
- Meet and Greet
After completing the necessary paperwork, you’ll meet Dr. Dawson and other team members to discuss your oral health history and smile goals. We’ll review your medical history and discuss medications you may be taking that will impact your oral care. We’ll discuss past dental treatments and current concerns about your oral care. We’ll also answer any questions about our practice or mode of operation, so you’ll know what to expect from ongoing care.
- Dental X-Rays
On your first visit, we’ll take full-mouth digital X-rays to better understand your current oral health. These X-rays will reveal if you have hidden decay, bone loss, or other problems that a visual inspection can’t detect.
- Dental EvaluationÂ
Dr. Dawson will inspect your teeth, gums, tongue, and cheeks for signs of decay or abnormalities. We’ll check previous dental work to ensure your restorations function as they should. We’ll check for soft spots in your tooth enamel, assess your bite and tooth alignment, and inspect your gum health for signs of gum disease.
- Oral Cancer Screening
Our new patient dental exam also includes oral cancer screening. Dr. Dawson will inspect your mouth, lips, tongue, neck, throat, and gums for signs of this deadly disease. You can cure this disease if you catch it early enough.
- Follow-Up Care
Dr. Dawson will discuss your exam findings to ensure you know of any dental issues that needs attention. Depending on your exam results, we’ll recommend options for treatment or routine care that can keep your smile going strong long-term.
