Don’t Accept a Lifetime of Suffering; Find Relief with TMJ Therapy

Jaw pain can feel like endless agony as it’s often relentless and constant, making opening and closing your mouth difficult. Thankfully, relief is right around the corner. At Peachtree Corners Dental Associates, Dr. Kristina Dawson provides safe and effective TMJ disorder treatment and jaw pain treatment for patients.

What is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ represents your temporal-mandibular joint, which connects your lower jaw to your skull. Issues can arise in this joint due to misaligned teeth, excess muscle tension, or trauma. Along with the two bones (the temporal and mandibular) that connect at the TMJ, the joint also has a disc used to buffer the bones and five muscles that move the jaw. When there’s something wrong with your TMJ, there are plenty of issues that may arise, such as:

  • Earaches
  • Headaches
  • Soreness/Trouble closing and opening your mouth
  • Popping or clicking of the jaw
  • Muscle Pain at the Jaw or Neck

Treating TMJ Disorder

There are numerous treatments Dr. Dawson may employ to treat TMJ disorder on a case-by-case basis. Treatments may include physical therapy, nightguards, replacing missing teeth to add support, adjusting your bite, and more. There’s no one size fits all solution for TMJ.

Nightguards tend to be one of the more common initial treatments for TMJ. Nightguards are custom-made plastic mouthpieces you can use to help reset the joint to a more neutral location. Dr. Dawson can also teach you a few helpful jaw exercises that can help ease TMJ symptoms while strengthening specific support muscles. Treating TMJ disorder can take a few days to a few months, depending on the cause and severity of the condition.
